The Green Gathering movement provided a key way for diverse activists from different parts of the broad 'ecology-green' movement to meet together.

The precursor of the green gatherings was organised under the Ecology Party in 1980 as a Summer Gathering for Eco members. There was no Glastonbury music festival this year and Michael Eavis allowed use of the site at Worthy Farm in August. As the leaflet makes clear it was a fairly loosely organised affair.

The second gathering was still called "Ecology Party Summer Gathering" but was trying to broaden its appeal to "the ecology movement as a whole". Glastonbury music festival was held in June'81 after taking a year off in 1980 and was linked with CND. The summer gathering was held a month later also at Worthy Farm courtesy of Michael Eavis.

The Glastonbury Gathering moved from Worthy Farm to nearby Lamberts Hill Farm. In 1982 the new Local Government Act had required a licence for "public entertainments" with the local authority able to impose conditions.
