Primary sources for Green History material

The Green Party has not been very consistent about where (and if) archive material is stored.

There are at least four UK Univesities which hold boxes of early archive material relating to the political activities of the green movement.

  • Teesside University: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - Suzanne Heywood This is said to be the most comprehensive collection and was, as of last year (2015), undergoing some cataloguing. Held as part of the "European Green Archive". http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N13732227 
  • University of Warwick: Has one box of material covering 1974-1983. Info http://mrc-catalogue.warwick.ac.uk/records/ECO Also some miscellaneous Green Party items (search on "Green Party" in quotes)

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. This collection is quite small, probably set up because the founders went to school in Warwick.
  • Strathclyde University: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - Wolfgang Rudig Built up by Wolfgang himself a lot of this is his personal collection. Wolfgang is a Green Party historian.
  • LSE: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. They have a few more recent pieces of Green Party material. Enter "Ecology Party" (in quotes) in the advanced search box for some early general election leaflets (not digitised)

There are also a number of individuals who may have old material and who may be willing to be contacted by genuine researchers. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. detailing who you are, who you wish to contact and the reason for your request.

  • Michael Benfield personal archive. Many documents from early days of PEOPLE and Ecology Party.
  • David Taylor. Green Collective, early Green Gatherings. Green CND

There are also rumours of local party archives in Oxford and Devon...
